WELCOME

The Hunter Transplant Research Foundation, HTRF, is the research arm of the Newcastle Transplant Unit located at the John Hunter Hospital within the Hunter New England Local Health District. It operates under the auspices of Hunter Medical Research Institute.

Our translational research is focussed on few key areas like expanding the live renal donor pool by using innovative techniques to allow transplantation of highly sensitised recipients, blood group incompatible recipients and the use of kidneys restored after removal of small cancers, development of a new immunosuppressive drug that could replace more toxic drugs currently used, research into the mechanisms of the two biggest causes of graft loss namely chronic rejection and recurrence of the original kidney disease, mechanisms of immune tolerance which could reduce need to take anti-rejection drugs long-term.
Our research involves collaboration with local scientists from HMRI and University of Newcastle as well as other centres in the USA. We have been involved in several Multinational clinical trials of exciting new drugs to limit damage to kidneys.

Our Vision

Todays research is tomorrows practice

  • Our vision is that problems in transplant clinical practice can be solved by integrating research in transplant immunology with clinical practice.

  • We aim for a dynamic alliance between the laboratory and clinic and other national and international transplant research centres.

  • Our vision is the integration of Transnet with business intelligence software and other transplant databases to accurately define clinical problems which will lead to substantial improvements in transplant recipient outcomes.

Impact of Donations

Big thanks to everyone who headed to Adamstown Bowling Club and helped raise $4,000 for kidney transplant research at the Hunter Transplant Foundation Glow Bowls event!

A great afternoon of Zumba, raffles, and barefoot glow bowls.

These funds help improve outcomes for patients who undergo life-saving kidney transplants, allowing researchers to continue to address some of the immediate challenges transplant recipients can encounter including organ rejection and side effects from the necessary immunosuppressant medications.

Big thanks to event major sponsor Australia Wide Roofing and raffle sponsors Brown Sugar Restaurant Springloaded Newcastle, Body Buddies Swell Fitness Cosmoworld and Pepper Tree Wines.

Emma and Rob's incredible support for Transplant research

At HTRF, we are constantly inspired by the generosity and dedication of individuals who come together to make a difference in the world. Today, we want to shine a spotlight on two remarkable individuals whose commitment to our cause has left an indelible mark on our community: Emma and Rob Atherton.

When they approached us with the idea of organizing a fundraising event for our transplant research, we were immediately struck by their passion and determination. Their selfless efforts have not only helped raise critical funds but have also sparked hope and renewed energy in our mission.
